To the south east of Orion, there is the constellation Canis Major also known as the Great Dog. Canis, is easy to find, not because of its pattern, but because it contains the brightest star in the sky – Sirius also known as the "Dog Star". Sirius - alpha Canis Maioris - has a magnitude of -1.5. Sirius is only 8.7 light years from our Solar System.
