Cetus is a large, dim constellation south of Pisces. It has one particularly interesting star: omicron Ceti or Mira. Mira is extremely large (it could contain both the Sun and the Earth's entire orbit within its diameter) but is generally too dim to be seen because of vapor surrounding it. Every 331 days Mira heats up, the vapor dissipates and Mira becomes for a short period a magnitude 2.0 star easily seen with the naked eye.
Cetus is usually identified as the creature sent to devour Andromeda, but was changed to stone at the sight of Medusa's head.
