Don't bother looking at M39 through a telescope; it appears at its best when viewed through a pair of binoculars. The apparent magnitudes of its stars vary between 7 and 10. The member stars of M39 are not very compressed still, they are relatively bright and present a lovely sight when seen with low magnification. Its area in the sky as about the size of a full Moon and is located about 1,000 light years away.
Unfortunately, M39 is not close to any bright star, although the long axis of Cygnus points to the correct spot.
